The Bulletin - A Community Update for November 15, 2013

The General Assembly (GA) In Israel

Jewish Federations have been meeting at General Assemblies for over 80 years to network, learn from each other, and to interface with world leaders. General Assembly programs feature timely themes that are highly relevant to the Jewish community. The GA inspires and engages Jewish leaders, tackles the most critical issues of the day, and showcases the best of the Federation movement. This past week the event was held in Jerusalem to celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday and the unmatched partnership between the Federations and the State of Israel. Delegates from 93 North American communities listened to speakers including President Shimon Peres, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Among topics of discussion was (of course) the recent Pew Research, and in consultation with the Filipino Jewish community an emergency response campaign to Typhoon Haiyan was successfully organized.

2013-14 Annual Campaign Underway

Last week’s Pacesetters event marked the launch of the 2013-14 annual campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford. Pledge cards for this year’s campaign will be mailed after Thanksgiving/Hanukah. Please consider making your contribution before the end of the year.  Thank You.

In the News-The Forward 50

Everybody loves top 10 and top 50 lists. In this year’s Forward 50 list, we find the likes of Philip Roth and Janet Yellen, Mandy Patinkin and Jenji Kohan, Ryan Braun and Angelina Jolie. I can already imagine lively debates in board rooms, and living rooms all over the country about who is/who isn't/why/why not? I was fortunate to personally meet one of the 50 last month at the Charles Bronfman Prize ceremony. It is Eric Rosenthal, and people like him who make this world a better place, that I find most deserving of such special recognition.

Shabbat Shalom,

The Bulletin is a weekly email from Amir Cohen, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford. I welcome your feedback at
