The Bulletin - A Community Update for June 13, 2014
This week Israel elected Reuven “Ruby” Rivlin as its tenth president. A former speaker of the Knesset and a long time Likud member, the 74-year-old Rivlin is a colorful and likeable character. An attorney by profession, he is well known for his support of minority rights and his love of soccer. For his first official visit in the community as speaker of the Knesset, Rivlin picked the Arab-Israeli town of Um-El-Fachem. Haaretz had an interesting profile of the new president. In their words, “He started as the guy who made bad jokes, but Reuven Rivlin became a forceful speaker of the Knesset and a leading candidate for president.”
Changes on Board of Directors
At the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford, we also confirmed a new president. Ellen Hull will begin a one-year term on July 1, 2014.
“I’m very honored to have been asked. I follow in the footsteps of many dedicated and outstanding leaders. I hope to continue their tradition of achievement,” said Ellen, former interim executive director, when asked to comment on her new position.
Stuart Forman, former Federation president, accepted the position of treasurer for the same one-year term.
Judy Barry, outgoing president, spoke at the last board meeting. Her closing words follow:
“As I said in my acceptance speech just a few months ago, I feel that we all should have a portfolio and accept responsibility for our work on the board.
“As I said in the beginning, thanks for the opportunity of serving as president of Federation. Believe It or Not by Judy Barry – I enjoyed every minute of the experience!”
