The Bulletin - A Special Community Update for May 11, 2016 – ISRAEL Week

Picture Day!

On Monday, Israeli chefs Israel Noah Odles and Tamar Salameh Digmi came, cooked and conquered – not just once, but twice. 

Earlier in the day, Israel (the chef) worked with Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech students and their instructor, Henry Bousquet, to prepare Israeli dishes of grilled eggplant with tahini and salsa, Israeli salad, falafel and hummus while Tamar guided another group in cookie decoration.  The students working with Tamar decorated flag cookies with designs that represented their own ethnic/national origins just as we celebrate Israel’s independence this week.   

Later in the day, at an evening dinner co-sponsored by the Federation and Tifereth Israel, the chefs again wowed with a menu that included a Gilboa salad, grilled eggplant with tahini and salsa, Israel’s signature bread, traditional North African couscous, “black” hummus, Nutella parfait with bananas and vanilla sauce and herbal-infused tea.  Guests left with patriotic cookies prepared by Tamar.  All agreed it was a wonderful gathering and celebration of friends here and in our partnership community of Afula-Gilboa, Israel.

And We’re Not Done Yet . . .

Tomorrow is Yom HaAtzmaut in Israel.  We will honor the day and continue Israel week here at the Whaling Museum with a screening of the wonderful documentary In Search of Israeli Cuisine.  It is also AHA! night in Downtown New Bedford featuring lots of fun and interesting events and experiences.  Bring your friends and join us for this delicious film!
