The Bulletin - A Community Update for April 18, 2014

Standard-Times article:  “Kansas attack resonates among SouthCoast Jews”

Following the tragic events in Kansas on Sunday, a reporter from the Standard-Times contacted members of the community for our impressions.  Here is the article that appeared on Tuesday, April 15.

Landscaping of Holocaust Memorial:  Green Thumbs Wanted!

On Saturday, Arbor Day, a crew from G. Bourne Knowles will be replacing the old plantings surrounding the Holocaust Memorial with new trees and laurel bushes. The new trees and shrubs need to be watered regularly.  If you can commit to taking a turn watering, we would love to hear from you at office@jewishnewbedford.org.  We thank NSTAR for its generous support, making this transformation possible.

Yom HaShoah

Join us for the 33rd annual Holocaust Memorial Observance on Sunday, April 27, 6:30 PM, at the Holocaust Monument in Buttonwood Park followed by a memorial program at Tifereth Israel at 7:30 PM.  Guest speaker Dr. Sharon Delmendo will speak about Holocaust rescue in the Philippines.

The following night, April 28, Dr. Delmendo will speak at a military presentation, A Somber and Durable Tapestry:  Jewish World War II Service in Bataan and the Philippine Resistance, at the Low Tide Yacht Club, adjacent to the Fort Rodman Military Museum, at Fort Taber, New Bedford. 7:00 PM.

In Celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut

Spend Sunday, May 18, with Federation friends as we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, the day commemorating the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948.

The day’s events include:

·         Shir Ba’emek, the award-winning singing ensemble from Afula-Gilboa, Israel, 12:00 PM.  Listen to this You Tube clip and become a fan!

·         Southcoast Blood Donor Van on site from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM  (Sign-up sheet coming soon.)

·         Lunch

Hosts needed!

Show our Israeli friends some Southcoast hospitality!  Members of Shir Ba’emek need homes to stay in for the evening of May 18.  If you are interested in hosting, please contact the Federation at office@jewishnewbedford.org.

Annual Campaign

Where has the year gone?  I know.  It’s only April.  But the fiscal year ends June 30.  If you have not contributed or pledged to our 2013-14 campaign, expect to hear from us by the end of the month with a renewed appeal for your support.  With you, there is no Federation!  And with no Federation, our community would be greatly diminished.  Thank you in advance for your generous support.

Red Sox and Theater Night

Tickets for Jewish Heritage Night with the Red Sox and Trinity Rep’s My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy are no longer available due to lack of interest.
