The Bulletin - A Community Update for March 28, 2014

PJ Library in the Real World

The Jewish community, like the nation and the world itself, wrestles with questions of diversity and inclusion.  While older generations are often challenged by change, youth accept it readily.  Just ask a kindergarten-aged child from an interfaith, interracial family with a sibling who has a physical disability.  To that child, normal is what she lives.  And to her classmates, normal is what they learn from her.

Jerry Silverman, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of North America, submitted this op-ed to New York Jewish Week earlier this week.  In it, he embraces the proactive stance of PJ Library on diversity, most recently explored in its book The Purim Superhero.

Our own PJ Library program provides Jewish-themed children’s books monthly to over 30 local children.  The Federation is proud to support this exciting program that keeps Judaism alive and relevant for children from all kinds of families.  If you know a child who would like to participate, please respond to

Last Call for 2014 Passover Relief Campaign

At the beginning of the Passover Seder we say, "Let all who are hungry come and eat!"  This is the essence and the focus of the holiday – to share what we have with those who do not.  At this time of the year, we ask the Jewish community to help those less fortunate among us who cannot provide Passover food for themselves and their families.  Please consider making a donation to the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford – Passover Appeal.  Passover appeal letters with reply envelopes have been mailed.  Your generous support is very much needed.  If you have already contributed, thank you.

College Scholarships

Making education more affordable for our students is a priority of the Federation.  Children of active members who will be enrolled in college in 2014-15 are encouraged to apply now for a scholarship from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford.  For more information, contact or call 508-997-7471.  Applications must be submitted no later than April 30.
