The Bulletin - A Community Update for July 9, 2015
It’s July. We are taking a vacation from Iran and politics this week. And we won the Women’s World Cup and all . . .
· Like the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who can connect (and credit) all things to Greece, one Jewish sports writer looked for and found the Jewish origins of U.S. World Cup soccer team phenom Carli Lloyd’s greatness.
· When news was hot off the press back in the day, it carried weight. Newspapers made of paper, printed with ink kind of weight. Now the news is delivered in a flash via the internet. The fluidity of the medium has been known to inspire genius and irreverence in equal measure. Check out the internet's biggest Jewish stars. Woodward and Bernstein, move over.
· U2’s Bono digs Shimon Peres. When the 92-year-old Peres attended a concert in Toronto this week (yes he did), Bono dedicated this song to Israel’s former president and prime minister .
· This one has to go down as one of the coolest (most audacious) job titles in Jewish life. Many, including Idit Klein, daughter of Federation members Judith and Andrei Klein, think she’ll be just that.
July is Planning Month
As you may know, the Federation’s fiscal year ended June 30th. This week as we close the books on 2014-15, we gather the information about our income from donations and investment returns as well as our expenses and with it we plan for the coming year.
Committees of hard-working volunteers meet to decide how and how much we will spend on allocations for overseas needs, local programs, college scholarships, support for local Jewish organizations, and (for the first time in a while) investment in professional development of our volunteer leadership. By the time a budget is presented to the full board on September 21st these plans and recommendations will have been approved by each committee and voted on by the executive committee as well.
The process is very democratic and I encourage Federation members who wish to join a committee and help make these decisions to contact me at any time.
Shiva for Ruth Piekos, mother of Catherine Russell, will be observed tonight from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, concluding with a shiva minyan at 7:00 PM, at the home of Michael and Catherine Russell, 56 Prospect Street, South Dartmouth.
