A Response to the Pro/Con Feature in The Standard-Times

Immediate past president Stuart Forman and I responded to the paper’s editorial feature discussing the pros and cons of boycotting Israel’s academic institutions.  The response was in yesterday’s paper.  Check it out here.

Red Flops No More  


It hasn’t always been easy claiming citizenship in Red Sox Nation (Bill Buckner • 1986 • ‘nuff said).  Thankfully, that’s history.  Today’s Sox are the reigning World Series champs!

Get the season off to a great start with family and friends on Jewish Heritage Night at Fenway, Thursday, May 29, when the Sox play the Atlanta Braves.

§  The Southcoast Blood Donor Van is on site from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM.  (Sign-up sheet coming soon.) 

§  Shir Ba’emek, the award-winning singing ensemble from Afula-Gilboa, Israel, performs at 12:00 PM.  Listen to this You Tube clip and become a fan!

Yom HaShoah

Join us for the 33rd annual Holocaust Memorial Observance on Sunday, April 27, 6:30 PM, at the Holocaust Monument in Buttonwood Park followed by a memorial program at Tifereth Israel at 7:30 PM.  Guest speaker Dr. Sharon Delmendo will speak about Holocaust rescue in the Philippines.

The following night, April 28, Dr. Delmendo will speak at a military presentation, A Somber and Durable Tapestry:  Jewish World War II Service in Bataan and the Philippine Resistance, at the Low Tide Yacht Club, adjacent to the Fort Rodman Military Museum, at Fort Taber, New Bedford. 7:00 PM.

 College Scholarships

Making education more affordable for our students is a priority of the Federation.  Children of active members who will be enrolled in college in 2014-15 are encouraged to apply now for a scholarship from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford and/or the National Council of Jewish Women.  For more information, contact or call 508-997-7471.  Applications must be submitted no later than April 30.
